What to Wear for Senior Photos in Boulder, Colorado
Planning your outfit for your senior photos can be challenging — especially in Colorado, where the weather is constantly shifting!
I’m here to help you find the fit that makes you feel like the main character you are! Let’s get into it.
There are 5 main factors to consider when choosing your outfit(s): location, comfort, movement, weather, and color.
LOCATION
Your outfit should feel natural for the setting we’re shooting in. If we’re by the beach or deep in the forest, a structured pencil dress and heels might feel a little out of place. That said, if we’re doing an outdoor nature session, you don’t have to go full hiking gear either! Think comfy-yet-stylish choices—sandals, Blundstone boots, Converse, or Doc Martens work perfectly.
COMFORT
If you’re planning to wear something new, give it a test run before the session. If you find yourself constantly adjusting it, tugging at it, or feeling restricted, it might not be the best choice. The most important thing is that you pick something you genuinely love and would wear in real life—not just for the shoot. When you feel good, it shows!
MOVEMENT
Expect lots of movement—walking, twirling, running, and all the spontaneous, fun moments in between. The last thing you want is clothing that feels stiff or restrictive. Opt for soft, flowy fabrics that move beautifully in the breeze and add that billowy, cinematic touch to your photos. If it’s chilly, you can layer up with different textures to keep you warm without sacrificing style. If you need help or advice, let me know!
WEATHER
Check the forecast for our shoot location, especially if we’re heading to the mountains or a dense forest, where temperatures can shift quickly. Layers are your best friend! A light throw or cardigan can keep you cozy if the air turns crisp and easy to remove if it warms up. Beanies, scarves, jackets, it never hurts to bring extra! The goal is to keep you comfortable, not shivering or overheating.
COLORS
Solid colors, quiet patterns, and neutral or earthy tones are always flattering in photos. If you love a pop of color, soft pastels can work fabulously too! I also love a primary color moment: think red with pastel yellow, green and blue, etc... When choosing shades, consider the setting. You’ll want to avoid clashing colors that could compete with the scenery instead of complementing it.
TLDR Tips:
Feel free to bring several outfits if you’re unsure. It never hurts to bring extra :)
Skip stiff, starchy fabrics that wrinkle easily or require constant adjusting. Comfort is key!
Avoid loud prints, splashy logos, and bright colors—they can pull focus away from the most important part of the photo… YOU!
Double-check for any distractions like visible bra straps, underwear lines, loose threads, or anything else you don’t want showing in your photos.
