How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session (So You Feel Confident + Actually Have Fun)

So.

You booked your senior photos (!!!)

Your date is coming up, and now you’re thinking:

“Wait… how do I actually prepare for this??”

What do I wear?
What do I bring?
What if I feel awkward?

If you’re planning your senior photos in Boulder, I got you. Let’s walk through everything you need to know so you feel confident, prepared, and actually excited for your shoot!

First Things First…

You don’t need to “know how to pose.” At all.

None of my seniors are models (even though it looks like they are hehe)

I guide you through the entire session so nothing feels stiff or forced. We keep things moving, natural, and fun. It’s more like hanging out with a friend than performing for a camera.

So if that’s your biggest fear, you can exhale now. :)

What to Wear

Here’s the key:
wear something that feels like YOU!

(I actually have a whole blog post about outfits HERE if you need more guidance.)

Think:
flowy dresses
cute layers
textures (linen, denim, knits)
something you can move in

If you’re deciding between two outfits, bring both. We can always decide together!

A few tips:

  • avoid super busy patterns or tiny stripes

  • neutrals + earthy tones photograph beautifully in Colorado

  • say yes to outfits that catch the light

And most importantly:
if you don’t feel confident in it, don’t wear it.

You’ll be able to tell in the photos!

What to Bring

A few small things that can make a big difference:

hair brush
lip gloss / makeup for touch-ups
comfy shoes (for walking between spots)
water / snack
a blanket or jacket if it gets chilly

Optional but fun:
sunglasses
a hat
a bouquet or props that feel like you

Trust the Process (Even If It Feels a Little Weird at First)

I’ll be honest.

The first 5–10 minutes can feel a little awkward, that’s NORMAL!

You’re in front of a camera, I’m telling you to walk back and forth, spin around, maybe laugh or give me your best Vogue cover… yeah, it can feel random at first lol.

But then something shifts.

We loosen up, we stop overthinking, we start to feel like ourselves!

And that’s where the magic happens :)

Timing + Light (aka the reason your photos will look insane)

I schedule sessions around the best light of the day — usually sunrise or sunset.

That soft, golden light is what gives your photos such a dreamy, cinematic feel.

However, we can make magic at any time of the day! If you’re only available at a certain time, that’s perfect, we’ll work with it <3

Don’t Stress About Being “Photogenic”

This one matters the most!!!

You don’t have to be “a good model” to have amazing senior pictures.

Seriously.

The best photos come from:
movement
real emotion
just being present in the moment

Not from standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera the whole time. I’ll be here guiding those moments so that all you have to do is BE present.

This Is Your Moment

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about photos.

It’s about capturing who you are in this exact season of your life. Your energy, your personality, your values, your accomplishments!

So come as you are.
Trust the process.
Let yourself have fun with it.

I got you the whole way 🤍
